Domestic Violence and Child Abuse Prevention
Long before domestic violence became an international issue, the Junior Leagues recognized that brutality against women and children was literally a matter of life or death. Junior Leagues everywhere have founded safe houses and crisis hotlines and developed comprehensive services to help abused women and children lead safer, productive lives. Last year, the Junior League sponsored on radio and television ads which spoke out against domestic violence. Our new relationship with the Task Force on Family Violence allows us to continue our efforts in this area.
Care Kits
In Milwaukee, The Junior league is involved in a successful collaboration with EVOCO, a subsidiary of second Harvest. JLM volunteers prepare and coordinate the distribution of backpacks filled with needed personal items to the children of domestic violence and victims of sensitive crimes. The JLM has also been instrumental in the refurbishing of Milwaukee County Courthouse waiting areas for both domestic violence and sensitive crimes. Using the Care Kits format, the JLM will continue to respond to critical material needs of those affected by domestic violence and child abuse.
